Personal Statement final draft

Drama is part of who I am, it opens up my mind and has helped me grow into the person I am today. It has opened so many doors for me in my life already and I have always expressed a strong interest in the arts, drama in particular. Theatre allows me to express myself and has given me aspirations for my life. Acting has been a constant journey for me and I want to continue this journey by studying Drama at degree level. I am currently studying a UAL Level 3 Extended Diploma in Performing and Production Arts.

At college I have performed in 5 productions influenced by various practitioners. For example, I feel I succeeded in a play called “Playhouse Creatures" By April De Angelis, which was very influenced by Stanislavski’s Naturalism method. Controversially I enjoyed learning Antonin Artaud's "Theatre of Cruelty" in my final show “Dracula” By Liz Lochhead. This method has bought me out of my comfort zone and has helped me develop as a versatile actor. I have also been involved in Brighton Live Productions and through this I worked as Stage Manager for a recent show, which gave me the chance to be responsible for the other actors and not just myself. This developed my knowledge of production skills to a more advanced level. This year I have been elected by my class to be Course Representative which is a massive achievement for me as it allows me to be the voice of my class at regular student council meetings and gives me the opportunities to make changes in our college.

I attended Stage Coach Theatre Arts Drama School, where I studied acting, singing and dance and performed in an annual musical performance. Later on I attended Adele Academy of Dance and Drama in 2008 and studied GCSE Dance. During my GCSE's I was awarded an NVQ in Dance Teaching for Junior School children, which involved planning lessons and teaching routines. Since 2011 I have worked as a commercial and promotional model. I created my own modelling website and gained excellent production, communication and business skills from this. In 2012 I was hired by an independent travel company to inspect their luxury hotels and write reviews for their brochure. I travelled to Italy, Paris and Dubai independently. This was a fantastic opportunity and gave me the chance to explore different countries, learn about new cultures and develop independence and determination. More recently in 2013, I took part in a short scene for the BBC Three programme Boom-town, which was filmed in a diner in Leicester Square. I have also attended castings for films and TV shows, including Les Miserable. I enjoy this even if I do not get the part as the experience is always worthwhile. In 2013, I was cast as an extra for a Gangster film called “It Is What It Is" which was filmed in Portsmouth harbour on board a boat.

I have worked for a Cabaret club in Brighton as Front of House working closely with the performers and making sure all the acts were organised and running on time. This work helped me to improve my stage management skills. All areas of my work experience so far have increased my knowledge of performance.

Continuing into higher education is very important to me, and I want to study drama to degree level. Over the past few years I have gained experience in performance which has enhanced my confidence and has allowed me to envision a clear path of where I want to go in my life. I strongly believe I would be a valuable asset as a university student as I can bring unique and creative ideas with me and I have a constant desire to learn and become a better actor. I want to widen my knowledge within theatre and studying at university would strengthen my goal of becoming a performer.
